Event Rules and Format
The format is an 18-hole Texas Scramble event to be played at Lindfield Golf Club on Friday 30th August
2024.
What is a Texas Scramble?
A Texas Scramble is a team-based competition consisting of 3 or 4 players per team.
Each team member tees off on every hole. The team chooses which tee shot to play their second shot
from. All players play their second shot from that spot. This process continues until the ball is holed.
The team score for each hole is to be noted on the card with all scores added together at the end of the
round. The team’s handicap is then deducted from the total gross to give the nett score for the round. The
scoring method is stroke play.
Each team member’s tee shot must be used a minimum of 4 times in the round (same for 3 & 4 person teams)
Rules of Play
Men off Yellow Tees/Ladies off Red Tees
The event will be played under R&A rules and local rules of Lindfield GC.
The player whose ball is selected must mark its position and play first. The mark must be placed 6” to the
right of the ball, at the same distance from the hole as the ball.
The remainder of the team must place their balls within 6” of the mark, not nearer the hole, everywhere
on the course except on the putting green where it must be placed 6” to the left of the mark not nearer
the hole. A dropped ball which rolls nearer to the hole than the mark must be lifted and redropped.
Once a ball has been selected, marked, and played by the player whose ball it is, the rest of the team play
from that position in any order they wish. No provisional or second ball may be played unless all players
have shot out of bounds.
Should a player break a rule of golf where the penalty would normally be 1 or 2 strokes that stroke may be
cancelled under no penalty providing the ball is not selected for the next shot. If the team wishes to use
that ball for the next shot, they must add the normal penalty stroke(s).
Should a ball be selected which is in a water hazard the usual options are available to the team. They may
play the ball as it lies under no penalty or may drop a ball under the water hazard rules and must apply a
one stroke penalty to the team score for the hole.
Should a situation arise which is not covered by these rules, players must follow R&A Rules. In any dispute,
the Comp Secretary ruling shall be final.
Handicapping and 3-person team adjustments
In the event a team must play with only three golfers, the following will occur:
One of the three golfers will play one additional shot e.g. on hole 1 – player 1 will tee off twice, play the
second shot twice, putt twice etc. This ensures the 3-person team has the same 4 shot attempts as a 4-
person team.
The extra shot rule must be rotated between the three players e.g. player 1 has the additional shots on
hole 1, player 2 on hole 2, player 3 on hole 3, player 1 on hole 4 etc.
The Competition Committee will define the team handicaps using the official scramble calculation. The
Committee will make any adjustments on the day if there is a change to the team members (4 to 3 players
and/or different handicaps within the team).
If a team must play with three players, the methodology will be to use a ‘ghost 4th’ player for handicapping
purposes. A ghost handicap of 18 will be applied.
Players are also reminded
The use of measuring devices throughout the event is allowable for DISTANT ONLY. Slope, wind etc are
NOT allowed – Rule 4 – 3a 1
It is every TEAM’S responsibility to be at the 1st tee a minimum of 5 minutes before their allotted tee time
and to go immediately to scorers desk (Located in the Clubhouse) at the end of their rounds to confirm
their scores. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL and is vital for the successful running of the event.
